 Welcome by President
Dear MR friends and colleagues,

Welcome to this month’s newsletter of your favourite society, the European Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology, of course! While some of you might have already taken some time off for holidays, I am sure that the rest of you are rushing to finish everything you need to do before the summer break. Heck, I myself am off to the sun for a few days and am writing this letter from the Airport lounge!

Before going on holidays, don’t forget to register for our society’s meeting, taking place this year in the gorgeous capital of Scotland, Edinburgh! Marion Smits and her team have assembled an amazing programme, which will give every member of our society, from radiographers to medical doctors to MRI physicists, students, professors, and whatever your title, MD, PhD, MD/PhD, DI/MSc, Dipl.Phys. and beyond, something memorable to take away. This year, our meeting will have several sessions in collaboration with IWPFI, EFOMP, ISMRM and MAGNIMS. Prof Ian Marshall, head of the local organising committee, has managed to arrange a beautiful venue for the welcome reception, and I am sure that everyone will find something to do in that beautiful city.

So, in order to benefit from substantial reductions when signing up for this meeting, or for all the other amazing teaching and networking activities of the ESMRMB, such as the School of MRI, the Lectures on MR, now under a new leadership, the Hands-on MRI courses or the Teach-the-teachers programme, please do not forget to pay your annual fee now!

For all updates and offers from your favourite society, follow us on Twitter (@ESMRMB), like us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/ESMRMB), or directly visit our main website: www.esmrmb.org!

Wishing you all a very nice summer, a great start of the new academic year in September, and of course, an amazing ESMRMB meeting, I remain,

Yours truly,

Xavier Golay

ESMRMB Congress 2015 Edinburgh: highlights of the programme!
This year’s ESMRMB Congress in Edinburgh from October 1-3, 2015 provides three days of educational and scientific programme, especially interesting for MR radiographers, basic scientists, physicians, radiologists, physicists and MR engineers alike.
The Sir Peter Mansfield Lecture will be held by Prof. Navon this year. Furthermore the programme consists of 3 plenary sessions and 13 teaching sessions. Additional highlights will be the Roundtable Discussion with the topic “Incidental findings” and the Hot Topic Debate with the topic “MR in acute stroke - a waste of time?”. There will be as well joint sessions with the IWPFI, the ISMRM British Chapter, EFOMP and MAGNIMS. Furthermore a brand new session - the Meet-the-Experts session - will be introduced.
The scientific programme will count numerous parallel scientific sessions for oral presentations. Time slots will be allocated for meeting the authors of traditional and electronic (EPOS) posters, as well as of Clinical Review Posters and Software Exhibits. The best posters will furthermore be presented in the “Lightning Talks Sessions” which will enable you to be briefly informed on the posters that are presented at the ESMRMB 2015!

ESMRMB’s Young Investigator Award for 2016
As you may know, the ESMRMB has awarded the YIA since many years. While in the past, the award has been linked to a newly submitted research paper in MAGMA (Magnetic Resonance Materials in Physics, Biology and Medicine) and an oral contribution at the annual meeting, we would like to make you aware of an important change in the award criteria to render the award even more prestigious. Starting from 2015, ESMRMB is now providing a stage for the most promising young European MR researcher mainly based on their overall career achievements rather than a single manuscript or congress contribution. We invite all young scientists to apply for the award and make use of the platform to boost their career. Requirements for applications include a CV summarizing the activities in MR, a contribution to the yearly congress (i.e. next for ESMRMB 2016 in Vienna) and publication of a manuscript in MAGMA, which can be original research, but where we also very much invite general reviews in an area related to their research. This article does not have to wait to be submitted for the time of the abstract deadline, but can rather already be submitted from now on.

So, grab the opportunity and prepare now to become the European Young Investigator ESMRMB in 2016.

The exact requirements for 2016 will be worded soon and will be very similar to the rules established for 2015.

 ESMRMB/ISMRM Teach-the-Teacher in Clinical MRI
ESMRMB/ISMRM´s Teach-the-Teacher fellowship programme does not know any boundaries.
With a successful launch last year, our candidates in 2014/2015 finished their two month fellowship programmes at high class and much appreciated hosting institutes and tutors, who reinforced the mission of the programme: to spread application and research in the field of MRI, aiming to fostering the MR knowledge/skills and the didactical competence to young radiologists from emerging countries. They emphasised that the programme has had an enriching impact on an educational, as well as personal level, gaining in-depth knowledge as well as new friends within the field. 3 of 4 candidates from India and China have been kindly supported by GE Healthcare. Fellowships for the next TTT circle in 2015/2016 are already about to begin for which we wish all trainees a fruitful experience!

 MR Enterprise Section: Bruker
Research Highlights in Focus
Recent news from top researchers in preclinical imaging demonstrates Bruker’s continued innovations in the field. Scientists at University Hospital Freiburg recently published an application note discussing their work in resting state functional MRI, using the MRI CryoProbe to gain insight into the mouse brain functional connectome.
And through its collaboration with Philips, Bruker has developed the first commercial magnetic particle imaging system. MPI delivers three-dimensional images in milliseconds and has the potential for real-time 3D imaging in vivo. Pioneers in the field offer their views on this cutting-edge technology and share their knowledge in recent video interviews.
